"Did you ever see the picture "The Spirit of "76"? ... It is of three soldiers in the Revolution. One carries the flag, one beats the drum, and the third, only a boy, plays the fife. And the young fifer might have been your own great great great grandfather. I do not know his first name, but his last name is Verrill. His daughter was Lucy Verrill, who married Simeon Sanborn."¹⁰² He began military service on 9 Jan 1776 A fifer. 3 short enlistments 9 Jan to 1 Jun and 7 Sept to 18 Nov, for coast defense. Also served in 1778 doing guard duty over Burguoyne's captured army. Pentioned 1832.¹⁰³ He was Highway surveyor in 1797 at Poland, ME.¹⁰⁴ He was Elected Clerk and Treasurer, served 16 years, declined further service, re-elected anyway, served 6 more years. Register of Deeds in 1816 in 1806 at Minot, ME.¹⁰⁵ As of 15 Dec 1838, he was also known as Samuel Verrill on gravestone.¹⁰⁶
